In April 1524 the Florentine-born navigator Verrazzano led the French caravel La Dauphine to the discovery of the Harbor of New York and named these shores Angouleme in honor of Francis I King of France

On one side of the marker is engraved “Per la verita/secolare per la/guistizia della/storia questo/monumento/rivendicatore/eresse il progresso/Italio-Americano/Carlo Barsotti/editore la colonia/Italiana concorde, il VI Ottobre MCMIX”, which translates very roughly as: “Carlo Barsotti, publisher of (the newspaper) “Il Progresso Italio-Americano” organized the installation of this statue on October 6, 1909”

On the rear of he support is engraved “Anno 1909/America e Italia ricordano Giovanni da Verrazzano/Fiorentino/che primo Europeo recorrendo altro piu foutuna/dal quale errero il nome/navigo queste acque/le qui terre erano destinate/per una delle citta capital del mondo”, which translates roughly as “In 1909, America and Italy honors Giovanni da Verrazzano, the first European who, through good fortune, sailed these waters whose lands were destined for one of the capital cities of the world."
