end of the construction. In addition, there are several chapels distributed throughout the temple, consecrated to various invocations of the Virgin Mary, the Holy Family, and various saints.

Construction on the temple lasted 84 years (1660-1744) and was in charge of different people. The initial project was conceived by the Italian architect Vicente Barroso de la Escayola, who directed it until his death in 1692, without having completed the dome, the portals or the towers. Other master architects such as Juan de Silva and Lucas Durán resumed the project. In 1731 Nicolás López Quijano was in charge of the construction, but it was not until 1744 that Joseph de Medina, who had worked on the construction of the Cathedral of Puebla, discarded the initial project and put in place a plan based on a style known as Barroco tablerado.

The interiors of the Cathedral were remodeled in 1898 in Neo-classical style, but it is possible to recognize some few signs of the Baroque in its different stages. The most significant transformations occurred when the choir moved to the apse, with which the central nave was integrated into a single space and the replacement of Baroque altarpieces by Neoclassical altars.

The Cathedral also contains a historical archive, open to the public, covering the period from 1540 to 1988, with a theme related to the ecclesiastical
