1. Protecting Undersea Rescue and Salvage Techniques Marker
Inscription. In 1927, the U.S. Navy established an experimental dive school at the Navy Yard. The school centralized training, allowing the consolidation of dive-related and submarine-escape research efforts—including the development of the Momsen Lung (shown in this picture), an underwater rebreather used during World War II by submariners as emergency escape gear. By the 1970's, the dive school had outgrown it quarters and was moved to Panama City, Florida.
