erected this parish, formerly a Franciscan mission founded in 1542 by Friar Juan de San Miguel, in the place known as San Miguel Viejo and which was transferred years later to this place by Friar Bernardo de Cossin.

The first primitive church building was a modest adobe with a coffered wooden roof made of two slopes. According to historical documents, a second building, a neighbor of the previous one, "was being built in 1578" which by "1649 had fallen".

The current Parochial Church was built by order of Bishop Friar Juan Ortega y Montañez starting in 1685, under the supervision of architect Marcos Antonio Sobrarías. Its main façade consisted of two towers, one taller than the other and on the sides of the portico, which had a curved rectangular window and above it a niche with the image of Saint Michael the Archangel. By the end of the 19th century, serious structural damage threatened the portico, which his why this pseudo-gothic tower (today the symbol of the city) would be built in 1880. The project's author was the master builder Zeferino Gutiérrez Muñóz, a native of this city. The original idea for the construction came from the Bishop of León and San Miguel, José María de Jesús Díez de Sollano and Dávalos and the person in charge of supervising the works was the city’s priest, José María Correa. The cost was 12,000 pesos.
