1. Bank of Upper Lake Marker
Inscription. Built in 1921 by J.A. Youngreen, the Bank of Upper Lake was a tribute to the prosperity of the area. This was a farming center with extensive cattle and sheep production. The Blue Lake bean developed here by Adolphus Mendenhall became the foundation of the green bean industry in California and Oregon. The Bean Cannery, started in 1896, hired as many as 400 workers some seasons. Additional jobs came from processing pears and dehydrating walnuts. A cheese factory, the Sonoma Mission Creamery, was located on Sabini Street.
The Bank of Upper Lake financed the rebuilding of the town after the fire of 1924. Youngreen's daughter, Marion Bucknell, became the first woman bank president in California when she took over for her father in 1942. The bank moved to what is now WestAmerica Bank in 1959.
