1. Original Site of Saint James Church Marker
The Mass in the early 1870's was celebrated in the home of the Sewall family, known as Walnut Hill, on South West Street. In 1874 the mission of Falls Church was established by the Bishop of Richmond and administered by priests from Saint Mary's Parish in Alexandria, then the closest parish. Land donated by Sabilla Sewall, daughter of a Confederate Army Veteran, saw a wooden frame chapel erected in 1879. The chapel was built for a stained glass window over the altar. The chapel was located along the western edge of what is now Saint James Cemetery. In 1892 Saint James was canonically established as a parish and the old church at Park Avenue and Spring Street was built in 1902.
This plaque is a symbol of our gratitude to almighty God for his manifold blessings on Saint James Parish, on the occasion of the celebration of its Centenary, 1992.
Erected 1992 by Monsignor W.T. Reinecke, V.G. Eight Pastor, in memory of Joseph and Margaret Kolasch.
