Valley in Syracuse in Onondaga County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
James E. Heath Park
In 1912, SUNY College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry purchased 95 acres of farmland from S. Salina Street to Lafayette Road as part of an experimental station. Pines, spruces and other evergreen trees were planted to demonstrate practical forestry restoration to the community. A basket willow plantation grew on a portion of the property. How many types of trees can you find in this park?
After the construction of Route 81 in 1962, cutting off access from the Lafayette Road Experimental Station, the western 33 acres were donated to the City of Syracuse to be used as a park. A stone monument with a bronze plaque located near the park entrance off S. Salina Street describes Native American and early settler activities on this land.
Heath Park provides nature lovers with a beautiful green space to bird watch, walk trails, garden, mountain bike, and cross-country ski. Enjoy this area for the plants and animals that call it home.
