1. Kinder Farm Ice House Marker
Inscription.
Henry Kinder Sr. built this ice house about 1910, shortly after buying this farm and moving from Curtis Bay to Millersville.

Ice house was refurbished by Dave Barry, A Friend of Kinder Farm Park.

There was always a need for a cool place to store meats, eggs, milk and canned goods.

Ice was likely stored in this building in the upstairs and food items downstairs.

These walls form an insulated storage bin within the ice house building. Ice is stacked inside the bin and covered with sawdust and straw insulation.

The boards in the center section of the ice wall are removed to load ice.

Ice is lifted and dragged with the large hooks or tongs hanging from the walls.

The ice pile cools the room below where milk or other perishables are stored. As the ice melts the water drains across the floor and through the hole to the left.

Ice in the ice house can remain frozen util late Spring.

By the 1940's when indoor refrigeration was available the ice house kept a few foods but was mostly used for storage of medicines needed for animal care.
