A River Reborn
The Clearwater replicates the mid-19th-century sloops that plied the Hudson River. Folk singer and river champion Pete Seeger launched the ship as a tool for environmental education and advocacy in 1969.

Marker can be reached from Parker Avenue (New York State Route 9G) ¼ mile east of Washington Street (New York State Route 9G), on the left when traveling east. Marker is mounted at knee-level on the north railing of the old Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge, about one mile west of the Parker Avenue parking lot for Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park. The sloop Clearwater is recognized as America’s Environmental Flagship and is among the first vessels in the United States to conduct science-based environmental education aboard a sailing ship, creating the template for environmental education programs around the world. More than half a million people have experienced their first real look at the Hudson River estuary’s ecosystem aboard Clearwater.
