Downs Park History Moment
Photographed By Devry Becker Jones (CC0), April 5, 2020
During the period 1913 to 1937 this property was the summer estate of H.R. Mayo Thom. The bridge and bathhouse pictured here were used by family and friends for access to the beach. Catherine (Thom) Parsons recalls:
"...We had lots of company at Rocky Beach.... We swam, explored the beach, went out in the Tonkaway (the Thom's yacht) and made driftwood fires on the beach where we roasted hotdogs on long sticks and toasted marshmallows. Growing up at Rocky beach was a kind of perfection that bid deeply into our memories, never to be forgotten.... "
The area pictured would have been just beyond this sign.
