Inscription. The Great March Storm of 1962 significantly damaged homes, businesses and roads along the Delaware coast. Following the storm, the Village Improvement Association (VIA) used the wood from nearby damaged buildings and the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk to construct the Children's Fishing Pier as a memorial. The pier was completed in 1963 and was scheduled for demolition in 2007 to make way for the new brick bridge over Lake Gerar. The VIA successfully petitioned city leaders to keep the pier in Lake Gerar Park for children of all ages to enjoy.
