Inscription. From where you are standing, with marshes and creeks and wide-open vistas all around, it is not hard to visualize what this area looked like thousands of years ago when the only human residents of Fox Hill were Indians. Oysters, crabs, fish and wild game would have been abundant, with numerous "highways" for travel by dugout canoe. Whitetail deer were as plentiful in Fox Hill then as they are today and supplied the natives with food, tools and clothing.

The very things that made a bountiful life for the Indians would do the same for colonists, and in 1625, when Captain Rawleigh Croshaw received 500 acres of land from the Virginia Company, the gradual shift from Indian to colonial culture began. A year later, for services performed for the Virginia Company, Thomas Flint was granted a parcel of land called "foxeshill." Legend has it that when flood waters inundated the low-lying land, foxes retreated to higher ground, although locals say it would be a stretch to call anything hills except nearby sand dunes.

The Kecoughtan Indians, the primary residents of the region before the English arrived in 1607, had a strong local chief who held the paramount Chief, Powhatan, at arm's length. In about 1595, Powhatan raided their village, marched off or killed his opponents, and put one of his sons in charge.

These were the guarded but hospitable Kecoughtans who greeted the Jamestown settlers when they landed near Point Comfort.
