1. Dr. Thomas A. Mayes Marker

Inscription. Born in South Carolina, Dr. Mayes was one of the first physicians to settle in El Monte (1852). He and several other physicians left New York on horseback in 1847 arriving in New Mexico where for 3 years he served as an Army surgeon. Dr. Mayes tended the residents of the area for many years. In 1853 he was the second candidate to receive degrees of Freemasonry in the newly organized Masonic Lodge.
