The monument takes the form of a tree trunk, with several bronze adornments.

The knapsack hangs from a broken tree limb, along with a musket, cartridge box, and bayonet. Note also the bronze "vines" around the monument.

6. The Bird's Nest
Near the top of the monument is a bronze bird's nest. According to a story told by soldiers, during the fighting a nest full of baby birds was noticed on the ground, upset by the firing. A solder of a regiment returned the nest and the birds to a nook in a nearby tree. Or so the story goes.

The 90th Pennsylvania held a position at the north end of the First Corps line. The regiment straddled the Mumasburg Road, seen here running from left to right.
