1. Seminole Rest Trail Marker
Inscription.
Welcome to Seminole Rest, part of Canaveral National Seashore and site of an ancient 18-foot-high Indian shell mound. Timucuan Indians occupied this site at various times from 2000 B.C. to A.D. 1565. A leisurely walk along the half-mile loop trail will introduce you to the Timucuans. Centuries of shells and other items left in the mound tell the story.

Please stay on the trail.
American Indians have requested that visitors keep off the mound in respect to the Timucuans who once lived here.

[Captions:]
The Snyders (above) lived at Seminole Rest from 1911 to 1988. In the early 1800s, the site was called Live Oak Hill because of the live oak trees found here.

After the Civil War the name was shortened to Oak Hill and finally renamed Seminole Rest by the Snyder family. The Timucuans looked to the water for sustenance. Besides collecting shellfish and fishing, they hunted with bow and arrow in the nearby forests and swamps.
