Lenni Lenape: The Original People
Thousands of years before the first Europeans arrived in Northern America. North American Indians known as Lenni Lenape occupied parts of New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania, including Reading and Berks County. The Lenape, part of the Algonquin linguistic group, were considered to be the "grandfathers" or the first people of the Algonquin nation. They practiced light agriculture and also hunted and gathered their food. They frequently settled near rivers, streams, and small creeks that provided them with a reliable source of fish, fur bearing animals, and transportation. The Schuylkill River and all of its tributaries, including the Wyomissing Creek, were undoubtedly used by the Lenape.
Many generations have passed since the Lenape were relocated to other parts of the country, but as you continue your journey along the Wyomissing trail, imagine how it might have looked and how much has changed since the time of the "Original People".
For more information about the Lenni Lenape, visit the Reading Public Museum.
