Meeker in Rio Blanco County, Colorado — The American Mountains (Southwest)
History of Meeker & the White River Valley
The county seat of Rio Blanco County, Meeker was an outgrowth of the "Military Camp on the White River," an Army base established to keep peace after the conflict between the Ute Indians and Indian Agent Nathan Meeker. This incident, which occurred on September 29, 1879, was the last conflict of the 1800s in which the military was called upon to intervene.
Two of the original military camp buildings are now home to the White River Museum, located one block north of here. The museum boasts wonderful collections representative of both the old west and the Ute Indian culture. Historic area highlights include rural schoolhouses, battle sites, and petroglyphs. Self-guided walking and driving tours of the area are available at the Museum.
The military presence ended in 1883, by which time ranching, farming, and commerce were already in place in the valley. These pursuits are what continue to sustain the community today along with energy extraction, tourism, and recreation.

1. History of Meeker Colorado. Over 10,000 years ago nomadic people inhabited this fertile valley sustaining themselves by chasing wild game and foraging for edible vegetation. The proud descendants of these people or the “Ute” identified themselves by various names one of which was the “Yampatika,” or “those who eat the root of the Yampa plant.” Meeker was the first incorporated town in Northwestern Colorado and is the county seat for Rio Blanco County. Until the last few decades, Meeker was a stable agricultural community similar in growth and size as other towns in Northwestern Colorado. Recently Meeker has expanded into the energy industry and oil, natural gas, and coal are the primary economic drivers for the local community. 2. Meeker, Colorado (Wikipedia). The town is named for Nathan Meeker, the United States Indian Agent who was killed along with 11 other U.S. citizens by White River Ute Indians in the 1879 Meeker Massacre. After the massacre and the ensuing conflict known as the Ute War, in 1880 the US Congress passed legislation requiring the Ute population to relocate to reservations in Utah. The United States Army established a garrison on the current site of the town, called the Camp at White River. The town was founded in 1883 following the removal of the troops.
