1. Potowatomi Burial Site Marker
Inscription.
Potowatomi Burial Site. . The view to the northeast shows the contour of the mound containing the Potawatomi burial site, an area measuring 4 rods square (66 feet), marked by 4 cairns. Is this a natural contour mound or did the natives enhance this site by carrying baskets of soil to the site? A few feet south, near the corner of the rail fences and benches, provides another view of the mound. William Smith, an early pioneer, fenced the 4 rod square burial site, but records indicate by 1861 or earlier, the fence was gone and the sacred grounds were plowed and planted - until August 31, 1992, when the area of 2.4 acres was donated to the Spring Arbor Historical Committee by George and Faith Kline and became Falling Waters Historical Park .
