1. Chief Powhatan Marker
Inscription. Chief Powhatan was the paramount ruler of more than 30 indigenous tribes in the Chesapeake Bay area, and the highest Native American authority the Virginia colonists encountered. He welcomed Capt. John Smith, and initiated peaceful relations with the English colonists. His legacy today includes several descendant communities among Virginia's recognized Indian tribes.
