This maker was originally erected some 350 feet north on the original alignment of Plantation Road, at 34° 3.783′ N, 77° 57.5′ W. It was moved here early in 2017 when that section of Plantation Road removed from the county's road system. Orton Plantation and its Gardens are no longer open to the public. It has been reported that the area is being restored to its natural habitat.
 
Regarding Orton Plantation. “Orton was purchased by James Sprunt LLD and presented to his wife Luola. In 1910 Mrs. Sprunt had wings added to Orton house, and with encouragement of her husband, began to design and plant gardens.”
