M172A1, Semitrailer, Lowboy, 25 Ton
The M172A1 'Lowboy' tandem axle trailer was fielded in 1955 to haul general cargo and was an upgrade to the original M172 created by Detroit Arsenal. Upgrades found in the A1 variant included a double-ended king pin and Ordnance designed axles that both improved durability and increased payload from 15 to 25 tons.
The advantage of the double ended king pin was that military and commercial tractors could be used to haul it. The versatile M172A1 had a long service life and was not phased out until the 1980s. One drawback of the trailer was the short bed length, which prevented certain vehicles from being carried.
