Murphy is perhaps one of the most famous of all thoroughbred jockeys. He was the first to win three Kentucky Derbies, 1884, 1890, 1891 and still has the highest winning percentage for a jockey - 44% (achieved in 1892-1895).

Murphy was born in Bourbon County, KY January 2, 1861 and died February 12, 1896 in Lexington.
