1. Joseph Scott Marker
Inscription. Nothing is known about Joseph Scott except that at a very young age (16) he was employed by the thoroughbred industry. His grave is unique because it is the only one in the cemetery that specifically identifies an individual as a 'jocky.' Matt Clark (Section B1, died 1917) began as a 'race jockey' who later served as 'head of workman' at the Kentucky Association Track for thirty-one years. Other individuals in the cemetery, such as Cassius Clay Tankersley (Section B) were called 'race riders.' African American youths were recruited at a very early age by trainers to work and ride horses. The majority of riders in the first Kentucky Derby were African Americans.
