In what was once the indigenous neighborhood of San Juan Maninaltongo, this square was formed by the Temple of San Juan Evangelista and Our Lady of Guadalupe and the old houses of Ireneo Paz and Valentín Gómez Farías, to whom this square owes its name.
Valentín Gómez Farías was a prominent Mexican politician who lived in the 19th century (1781–1858).
He was vice president of the Republic twice and tried to establish new patterns in the political, economic and social life of the new nation identified with liberal thought.
