1. William C. Holgate Park Marker
Inscription. William C. Holgate (1814-1888) settled in Defiance in 1836. A lawyer by profession, Holgate rode on horseback to Columbus, Ohio during the winter of 1844-45 with a petition he had drafted, which resulted in the establishment of Defiance County. Holgate was also instrumental in bringing the Baltimore and Ohio and Wabash Railroads to Defiance. In 1864, Holgate contributed to financially troubled Defiance College from his personal savings to secure the college's deed and hence ensure the future of the Defiance College. On this site stood the "West Schoolhouse” where Second Ward Elementary School Children were educated from 1898 to 1941. In 1994, the Defiance City Board of Education gave permission to name the plot William C. Holgate Park in memory of one of Defiance's most prominent early citizens.

Erected 1995 by Holgate Avenue Association.
