Inscription. Mary Ingles was a young pioneer wife taken captive in a Shawnee raid in July 1755. Brought by her captors to Big Bone Lick, here in Boone County, she escaped in October 1755. Mary then fought her way through 800 miles of uncharted wilderness along the Ohio, Kanawha, and New Rivers to return, barely alive, to her home in Draper's Meadow, Virginia. Reunited with her husband, Mary lived to 83, dying in 1815. Mary's extraordinary story can be found in the novel “Follow the River” by James Alexander Thom.
