1. Caddo Indian Dugout Canoe Marker
Inscription. Caddo Indian Dugout Canoe. ca.A.D.1025-1260. A Caddo Indian dugout canoe dating to the early Caddo period (ca. A.D. 900-1200) was found in the bank of the Red River on the North family property near this location in August of 1983. A section of the canoe was discovered protruding from the river bank by John Paul Hobbs, and it was recovered with the assistance of Rose and Kendall Kelly of Dixie, and other residents. Clarence Webb, archaeologist, led in the recovery and restoration process. The canoe is 30'8" long and 1'10" wide, with height of sides from 1'6" to 2'4". It is on exhibit in the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum in Shreveport. The canoe is contemporary with the Caddo village and mounds located on Mounds Planation in Dixie. .
