Inscription.
In this area are buried seven early Mayors of the City of Lynchburg:
Samuel Jordan Harrison (1768-1846), Mayor 1808, 1814, 1817
John Schoolfield (1766-1831), Mayor 1811
William Morgan (1769-1842), Mayor 1818
John Thurman (1778-1855), Mayor 1820
John Victor (1793-1845), Mayor 1825
Ammon Hancock (1788-1847), Mayor 1829, 1837, 1841
Pleasants Labby (1792-1860), Mayor 1836

These men served in many important roles laying the foundation of this City. One was responsible for organizing the first municipal government and pushed for expansion and regulation of this cemetery. Others created a water system for drinking and for fighting fires, dealt with the perennial problems of dog control, and were involved in various ways with the cornerstone of Lynchburg's early economy - tobacco.
