Josiah Holbrook was the founder of the Lyceum Movement in America. He died as a result of a fall into Blackwater Creek while on a geological excursion. Assembling in haste, the only mourners were the schoolboys who had been his faithful students.
The inscription on this tombstone reads:
"Died June 17th, 1851, aged about 83 years. He was born in the State of Massachusetts. His life was devoted to the subject of education. He was a man of unbounded philosophy; an ardent lover of science and a general benefactor and a most exemplary Christian. He came to his death suddenly while engaged in his geological and mineralogical pursuits in the immediate vicinity of Lynchburg.
