1. Amelia Elizabeth Perry Marker
Inscription.
Amelia Elizabeth Perry (1857-1932) was one of the first Negro teachers in the Lynchburg Public School system. She was first appointed in 1881 and was principal of the Polk Street School for 20 of her 33 years of service.

Among her many noteworthy accomplishments was the Cooking School she established for Negro girls in 1903. Later she persuaded the Lynchburg School Board to incorporated this concept into the required curriculum. So successful was the program that in the early 1950s the Amelia Pride Homemaking Cottage was built at Dunbar High School. Unique in the nation, it served that school and Amelia Pride's goals for more than forty more years.

Amelia Pride is buried nearby in the Pride family square.

Note: An interesting handwritten note dated 1914 found in City of Lynchburg files reveals an agreement between City officials and Claiborne Pride, husband of Amelia Pride, that Mr. Pride agreed to move his relatives' bodies out of the Pride family lot should the City ever decide to extend Third Street through his square over to the Cemetery main driveway.
