These eloquent words appeared in an editorial in the Lynchburg News at the time of her death:
"A superior cook, perfect in serving dinner for special occasions, and a laundress who did exquisite work, comparable to a fine French hand-laundry these services while in a class one would call humble were rendered by one who knew pride in her work and would not compromise its quality. Her going now removes one more of those people among us of another race who were respected, admired, loved and should be cherished . She was an artist and a lady in her field. There was that rare quality called grace in her life."
Jennie Hicks' grave is midway across to the west in the Philmore Hicks Family plot.
