What's With All Those Barrels?
The barrels you see next to Donkey Creek are part of a Remote Site Incubator (RSI) system which was initiated by local commercial fishermen in 1971. Today, members of the Gig Harbor Fishermen's Club continue filling the RSI's with about one million hatchery eggs in January of each year. The barrels protect the maturing fish from predators and swift currents. This protection greatly increases the survival of young salmon which helps to build the salmon population. Look for returning chum salmon, and occasional coho, in November and December.

Fish With Many Names
Chum Salmon: Oncorhynchus keta may also be referred to as dog, keta, or silverbrite salmon.
