Soldier's and Sailor's Plot at Oakwood
Dedicated by the Grand Army of the Republic Root Post #151
231 Civil War veterans are interred here including several killed in action and reinterred in Syracuse.
In 1951, vandals stole the original statue erected in 1895. In the early 1960's the original headstones were toppled rendering them unusable.
In 1999, restoration was begun by the 122nd NY Volunteers, Inc. a local living history group, to restore this section. Working with friends, the monument was replaced and dedicated on November 11, 2006.
The men who rest here came from all walks of life for a common cause. Many gave the best years of their lives, some gave their lives so that we may enjoy the blessings of a free, united nation.
"Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten, as a people, the cost of free and undivided republic."
"If other eyes grow dull and other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remain in us."
From General Order 11, Headquarters, Grand Army of the Republic
Washington, D.C., May 5, 1868
