Cobble Hill in Brooklyn in Kings County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
St. Paul Catholic Church
Did You Know?
Built in 1836, St. Paul is the oldest Catholic church building in New York State.
Its courtyard (open to the public) is the grave site of Cornelius Heeney, an Irish immigrant whose charity was a force for good in the early days of our city. By his death in 1848, he had not only financed several churches but also the city's first free school and several orphanages.
In May 1903, Saint Paul hosted the first Communion Breakfast in the U.S.A., launching what would become a beloved national tradition.
Today, St. Paul carries on this heritage through educational and cultural activities and frequent visits to the homebound (including Cobble Hill Nursing Home).
