Essex Village in Lower Connecticut River Valley Region, Connecticut — The American Northeast (New England)
The Onrust
The Onrust is a replica of one of the first sailing ships built in the New World and the first European vessel to explore the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound. On his fourth voyage to the New World (16131614), Dutch explorer Adriaen Blocks vessel burned off of Manhattan Island. Over the winter of 1613/14 Block and his crew built a new vessel, the Onrust. She would go on to explore large parts of the northeast and in April of1614, she made her way to present day Hartford, CT (approximately 60 miles up River from Long Island Sound). Block's efforts resulted in detailed coastal maps of the northeast region, the founding of New Netherlands, the establishment of a Dutch fort in Hartford and at the mouth of the River, and trade with Native Americans. The long-term ramifications of this exploration significantly impacted the River's environment and Native American culture. The Onrust Project (a New York not-for-profit) built the replica of the Onrust with the help of over 250 volunteers. Launched in 2009, the vessel is a floating museum educating students and adults about our early colonial history, the fur trade, and the Age of Exploration.
