You can't see them, but there are oysters growing under the water in front of you. There used to be over 200,000 acres of oyster reefs in New York Harbor. Now, the Billion Oyster Project is bringing back this keystone species to help reverse the effects of pollution and provide habitat, with the help of nearly 5,000 middle and high school students.

[Captions:]
By 1906, over-harvesting and pollution had decimated the oyster population in our harbor.

Since the passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972, the water quality of the harbor has improved enough to allow oysters to begin forming reefs again.
