1. Virginia Peanuts Marker
Inscription. The peanut—also called "groundnut" elsewhere in the world—is a legume crop grown mainly for its edible seeds. The name "peanut" may be misleading as it is not a nut crop! Science classifies peanut as both a "grain legume" and, due to its high oil content, an "oil crop". It is grown widely in both the tropics and subtropics and is important to both small holder farmers and large commercial farmers around the world. The peanut pods start above ground but develop underground (geocarpy). The renowned scientist George Washington Carver identified many uses for peanuts that helped develop more demand and allowed peanuts to be rotated with other crops for good farming practices. In the USA peanut production is in three major regions covering 13 states: 1. The Southeast; 2. The Southwest; and 3. Virginia and No. Carolina. The US is the 4th largest producer of peanuts in the world and we export 25 to 30% of what we grow.
