Inscription. Wetlands like those pictured here once functioned as a natural filtering system for the Anacostia River, but development in the region led to the destruction and infill of almost all of the river's wetlands. These restored wetlands near Greenbelt, Maryland are part of an ongoing effort to reestablish wetlands in the Anacostia River watershed.
