Hotel District in Atlanta in Fulton County, Georgia — The American South (South Atlantic)
Atlanta's "Main Street"
Auburn Avenue
— The Auburn Avenue Trail —
By 1920, Auburn Avenue had become the "Main Street" of Black Atlanta. Many prominent African Americans lived along or near this prosperous commercial avenue, where the city's leading Black enterprises and institutions could be found: real estate and construction firms, newspapers and funeral homes, insurance companies and banks.
From Courtland Street to Jackson Street, Auburn Avenue's storefronts and offices proudly accommodated African American physicians and dentists, photographers and florists, craftsmen and grocers. Churches, fraternal groups, hotels, and entertainment establishments contributed to the vitality and spirit of cooperation and mutual aid that permeated this bustling corridor.
