Inscription.  
The Biddeford Daily Journal as a weekly abolitionist paper. Saco publishers Cowen and Noyes purchased the Eastern Journal which became the Union Journal in 1858, then the Biddeford Daily Journal in 1858, then the Biddeford Daily Journal in 1884, and now goes under the name of the Journal Tribune. Both Cowen and Noyes served in the Civil War. Cowen, a cavalry man, contracted malaria and died. Noyes was taken prisoner when he bravely stayed behind Southern lines to aid the Union wounded. He spent most of the war in the notorious Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. The newspaper has had several homes. Some were destroyed by fire, making early copies rare. Portland architect, John Calvin Stevens, designed this building in 1906. It also housed the telephone exchange and the La Justice French newspaper.

connu présentement comme le Journal Tribune. M. Cowen et M. Noyes servirent pendant la guerre de Sécession. Le premier finit par mourir du malaria. M. Noyes venant au secours des blessés fut emprisonné dans la prison Libby à Richmond en Virginie pour la durée de la guerre. Le journal a eu plusieurs site, quelques-uns détruits par le feu ce qui fait que les premières éditions sont plutôt rares. Le dessin du bâtiment date de 1906 et est de l'architecte John Calvin Stevens. Le bâtiment abrita aussi le service téléphonique et La Justice, journal en français.
