Inscription.
Jim Sergeant enlisted in the US Navy on June 25, 1964. Following Boot Camp and internal Communications training, Jim served tours aboard the Naval Nuclear Power School, Vallejo, CA; Nuclear Power Training Unit, Schenectady, NY; and USS Tattnall (ODG-19). James B. Sergeant, ICFN was Honorably Discharged from the Navy on August 9, 1971.

Jim subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Coat Guard on April 25, 1972. Jim entered the Coast Guard as an Electrician's Mate 2nd Class due to his previous service and rate in the Navy. Jim served aboard the USCGC Duane (WPG-33); USCGC Station New York; USCGC Evergreen (WLB-295); and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. James B. Sergeant was Honorably Discharged from the Coast Guard on January 1, 1980.

Jim began his association with Ex-USS Albacore AGSS-569 as a volunteer docent circa 1986. Within a few years Jim was hired as Executive Director. Over the ensuing years Jim distinguished himself as the public face of the Albacore Park Museum. During Jim's tenure he operated and managed the park's Visitor's Center; established and maintained relationships with Albacore's builders and former crew members; established and maintained relationships with the Portsmouth community and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard; acted as Albacore Park's conduit to the National Historic

Jim faithfully responded to the concerns of the PSMA Board of Directors, Albacore's patrons, former operators, and builders. Jim continually promoted the physical well-being of a proud U.S. Navy Ship reflecting positively on Albacore Park, the U.S. Navy, and the Submarine Service.

Jim retired as Executive Director in March, 2011.

Jim Sergeant was a very active and loyal member of HNSA. HNSA is a non-profit organization whose membership is comprised of naval ship museums and memorials around the world. HNSA support museums of their members by being a networking and information hub to advance the preservation and promotion of all ships represented. Jim was elected to the Board of Directors in 1997 and in 2001 was elected Association Treasurer, a position he held for six years. Jim was subsequently elected President 2004.

Jim was presented with HNSA's Old Walrus Award for demonstrated knowledge of the Historic Naval Fleet in 1999; the President's Special Award in 2007 for his outstanding service as Treasurer; and the William J. Diffley Award in 2011 upon his retirement and in honor of his great contributions tot he success of PSMA and Albacore Park.
