1. Henrietta Vinton Davis Residence Marker
Inscription. Henrietta Vinton Davis (1860-1941), a certified teacher by age 15, was the first black woman employed by the DC Recorder of Deeds. After serving there with Frederick Douglass, she went on to become an acclaimed actor and elocutionist (a public speaker presenting in a dramatic style). In 1919 Davis began working with Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association–African Communities League, over time rising to a leadership position. Eventually she headed the Universal Negro Improvement Association, Inc.
