1. Ionia R. Whipper Home Marker
Inscription. Obstetrician Ionia Rollin Whipper (1872-1953) was a leader in health care services for the city's young women. Born in South Carolina to an illustrious family, Dr. Whipper was educated in the DC public schools before graduating from Howard University Medical School in 1903. Her experience in the Freedmen's Hospital maternity ward led her to establish the Ionia R. Whipper Home for Unwed Mothers in her home/office at 511 Florida Avenue, NW. the facility moved to 2000 Channing Street, NE, in 1951 and remained the only maternity home for DC's African American women well into the 1960s. In 1978, it became a shelter for young women.
