Tipi: "They Dwell"
Few dwellings stir the imagination like the tipi. Used by nearly all Native American tribes of the Great Plains, this practical, moveable, one-room home was ideal for seminomadic tribes that followed buffalo herds across the prairie.
Inside the Tipi
Seven or more people lived in a tipi. Many households consisted of three generations living together. Disputes over space were rare. Each member took no more space then she or he needed and was careful not to encroach on someone else's space.
Animal hides usually covered the ground. In winter, a lining was added to keep the tipi warm. During the summer the lining attached to the cover was removed, and the cover was raised a few inches to increase airflow.
[Captions:]
Sitting and sleeping areas were arranged around a central fire pit dug in the middle of the floor. The top of the tipi was tightly closed. A smoke hole on the front side of the tipi would release smoke.
Tipi, is a Dakota word that is a combination of ti, meaning "to dwell," and pi, which means "they." Thus, the word means "they dwell."
