1. Joining the Marches Marker
Inscription. People across the country took notice of the Birmingham demonstrations. Donations began pouring in to help post bail for hundreds of marchers, mostly children. Local leaders estimated the amount for bail at well over $200,000. As anger grew in the Black community over the jailing of children, more people crowded into the Monday night mass meetings that were held in churches across the city. More adults followed the brave example set by the children and joined the marches. Hundreds more foot soldiers were arrested and the jails overflowed.

Police stop and arrest a group of children who are marching from Sixteenth Street Baptist Church to City Hall. Here, a girl's sign calls to mind a biblical verse about true godly love. Faith, morality and justice are the foundations of this non-violent Movement. Some hold signs saying, “Everybody wants freedom.” Some of the children are so young that they mispronounce "'f'eedom." Police arrest about 1,000 people this day. Thus, the Birmingham Movement fills the jails with local unsung heroes. It soon becomes nationally recognized as a true
