St. John AME Church and Day Care Center are on the site of the former church that hosted Monday night mass meetings during the early 1960s. It was also a center where “Project C" leaders came to strategize about their plans of action in the 1963 Birmingham Campaign. Even after the campaign, it was a place where Black Birmingham leaders came to plan marches and protests against continuing hiring discrimination and police brutality. One campaign against the Birmingham Police Department included marches and protests that lasted for more than a month.
