1. Loveman's Department Store/McWane Science Center Marker
Inscription. Built 1934-35 (remodeled into science center 1997), 216 19th St. N.
The Loveman's Department Store (originally Loveman, Joseph, & Loeb), was a high-and retail store targeted for economic boycotts, pickets. "Project C" coordinators specifically staged sit-ins at its elegant second-level cafeteria as part of the ACMHR - SCLC joint campaign in Birmingham 1963. Police Commissioner Eugene “Bull” Connor threatened to revoke the business license of any department store owner that made any concessions to "Project C" leaders Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The four-story building now houses the McWane Science Center, a popular city center attraction.

“The economic boycott was so tight, the town was paralyzed."
Rev. Andrew Young
SCLC negotiator during the 1963 Birmingham Campaign, former mayor of Atlanta and former U.N. Ambassador.
