Mattoon in Coles County, Illinois — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Site of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church
constructed 1859, reconstructed 1895 with elements of the old building included.
In 1863, the church basement was used as a Civil War hospital. Mattoon served as an exchange point for soldiers on their way to and from the war front. The church was also used as a jail holding 26 "copperheads" from the famous Charleston riot.
