The design for the construction of this monument to Friar Antonio de Montesino was the work of the Mexican architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and the emblematic sculpture was designed and built by the Mexican sculptor Antonio Castellanos in 1982. Their gift was an initiative of Mexican President José López Portillo as a symbol of eternal friendship between Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
On June 25, 2019, under the management of the honorable mayor of the City of Santo Domingo, David Collado, it was reopened after its rehabilitation and enhancement, opening its doors again to the public.
