Druid Hill Park in Baltimore, Maryland — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Sea Lions Came First
Historic Maryland Zoo
In 2009, the Zoo's prairie dog colony moved from this location to their current home near the Zoo's Main Gate. Before there were prairie dogs here, though, there were sea lions.
The first sea lion in Druid Hill Park arrived in 1884 by train from California in the middle of the night after an eight-day journey. It was meant to inhabit one of the now overgrown Three Sisters Ponds in another part of the park. It "slipped out upon the bank" of Pond No. 2, "gave a plunge headforemost, and was out of sight," reported The Sun. Captain Cassells, superintendent of Druid Hill Park in 1896, declared sea lions to e "the show attraction of the park." The charismatic marine mammals moved onto the Zoo's campus, and into an aquatic exhibit at this location in 1910.
